The month of November is for the celebration of Native American heritage and the events were crafty.
Craft night was hosted Wednesday night where students could make traditional Native American jewelry.
Jessica Whiteaker, president of the Native American student organization, said this night was a way for SIU students to take part in the traditional craft making.
Traditionally, bedding would’ve been done with porcupine needles, bones and glass beads but Whiteaker said these authentic materials were too expensive.
“I think jewelry is found through all cultures and jewelry is a way for people to express themselves,” Whiteaker said.
During this month, Whiteaker said she wants to highlight Native American students on campus.
“We are still here, we’re on campus and we want to be respected,” Whiteaker said.
Whiteaker said she thinks this month can help educate people and is a opportunity to share their culture.
“I think the importance of Native American heritage month is that for people to remember that there are still Native American students and they’re not mystical or mascots.”
