Sophia Schlicklin Emerging as Breakout Player for Soccer

By: Howard Woodard

Women’s soccer (3-2-2) split the first two games of a four-game home stretch.  Their first matcha against North Alabama last Thursday was headlined by freshman Sophia Schlicklin who scored her third and fourth goals on the season. Her first score was within the second minute of the game, and she was assisted by McKensey Bunch, but the Lions quickly tied the game in minute five. Maycie Massingill got her first goal of the year off of the assist from Dana Cruz to reclaim the lead for SIU at 32’. Schlicklin’s second score was unassisted and gave the Dawgs insurance to win it 3-1. Last Sunday, SIU was shutout by Lindenwood and couldn’t get a shot to find the back of the net. Head coach Graeme Orr said he wants his team to penetrate more to have better drive with the ball and impact scoring opportunities more. SIU Edwardsville will come to Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex on Thursday, September 12 at 6pm and Illinois State will follow suit on September 19.
