Soccer Welcomes Illinois State to Open MVC Schedule Slate

By: Howard Woodard

Saluki soccer (4-2-2) is having the program’s best year in their short history. After beating SIUE last Thursday, the Dawgs are playing well before they start conference play. No goals were scored in the first half of their match against the Cougars, but McKensey Bunch opened the scoring in the 47th minute, her third goal of the year. Seven minutes later, Hannah Elkebir scored to extend the SIU lead to 2-0. A free kick by Edwardsville at 73’ cut the score in half but the Dawgs held on to seal the victory. The team is also picking up a reputation of being physical, registering 14 fouls in this game. But they also have already scored more goals than in three other seasons, as the program has begun to come together under coach Graeme Orr. They will be at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex again on September 19 as they’ll take on Illinois State at 6 pm.
