SIU soccer (6-7-5) lost five straight games to conclude their regular season. They did clinch their second MVC Tournament in the short history of the program, but the team has spiraled to close the year.
Last Thursday, they fell to Drake in their final home game. The Bulldogs jumped out early in this one, scoring their first goal at 7’ and then adding a second score at 19’. The Dawgs would respond as their team leader in goals, McKensey Bunch, scored her fifth of the year assisted by Guliana Balistreri.
Neither team found the back of the net again though, as the Salukis couldn’t capitalize off a corner kick in the final two minutes. Both teams had 11 shots and goalkeeper Fabiana Solano had four saves.
Southern traveled to Evansville to take on the Purple Aces on Sunday and both teams started out slow. SIU outshot Evansville 5-2 in the first half, and 8-4 in the game, but the Aces converted on a corner kick at 39’.
The Aces would add a second goal in the 59th minute and the Dawgs couldn’t create ample opportunities to respond, falling 2-0. The Saluki defense, which has been stout for most of the season, has now started to leak down the stretch while continuing to struggle offensively. They will take on the Sycamores at Indiana State to open the tournament on Thursday, October 31 at 5:30 pm.
