Soccer Struggles Offensively in Two Losses

by: Howard Woodard

The Salukis (6-5-5) have now lost three in a row after dropping games against Missouri State and Belmont over the past week. They didn’t get into the back of the net once over the two games and need to find a way to create more consistent offensive pressure before the MVC Tournament commences. In the game against the Bears, SIU only mustered four shots, with just one of them being on goal. This number is really staggering compared to Missouri State’s 20 shots and eight corner kicks. But even with the Bears living in Saluki territory, they didn’t allow a goal for an extended time. Finally, at 86’, a Bears’ free kick resulted in the game’s first and only score, giving the Dawgs a heartbreaker at home. They then traveled to Nashville for their matchup against the Bruins but fell 3-0 as the Salukis couldn’t convert on their scoring chances. They got two early shots on goal but didn’t connect before Belmont scored at 14’. SIU got ten shots off in the first half, with seven of them being on goal but couldn’t knot the score at one. The Bruins doubled their lead at 53’ and then essentially ended the game at 67’ with their third goal. It was a game where both teams pushed the ball offensively, but Belmont capitalized while the Salukis could not. Fabiana Solano recorded six saves in this one as she played all 90 minutes, just like she has in every other game this season. The Dawgs will have their final home game on Thursday, October 24 at 6 pm against Drake (6-6-5). They will then face Evansville (1-7-7) on the road to conclude the regular season on Sunday, October 27 at 12 pm.
