Saluki soccer (6-3-5) lost its first game since September 8 vs Lindenwood as they fell 2-1 to UNI on Sunday. The Panthers put immediate pressure on the SIU defense, getting a shot off within two minutes before scoring at 8’. They out-shot the Dawgs 7-5 in the first half. The next score came from Northern Iowa at 54’ as they extended their lead to 2-0. The Salukis’ team leader in goals responded as McKensey Bunch knocked the ball into the back of the net at 61’ off the assist from Kylie McDermott. There would be other opportunities from SIU in the second half to tie the game up, as they pushed eight shots in the last 45 minutes, but couldn’t get one past UNI’s goalie. There has been offensive pressure from the Dawgs recently, which is encouraging if it is added to a Saluki defense that has been elite all season. They lead the MVC in goals allowed (11) and goals allowed per game (.79). Fabiana Solano is second in the league in save percentage (.831) as she continues to be the anchor for SIU, playing every minute of every game so far. The Dawgs will remain at home for their next game, as they’ll play Missouri State at Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex on Thursday, October 17 at 6 pm.
