Saluki Invitational Kicks off Volleyball at Davies

By: Howard Woodard

After playing their first games of volleyball in Carbondale at the Banterra Center a few weeks ago, the Dawgs (6-3) will return to Davies this weekend for three games in the Saluki Invitational. SIU is coming off a two-game split at the Lindenwood Invitational where they fell to Lindenwood and swept Austin Peay. The Bears hit .319 and had 10 blocks which propelled them in this five-set match. Even though the Salukis led 2-1 heading into the fourth set, Lindenwood came back with their backs against the wall in that fourth set before winning the final set to 15 wire-to-wire. Annabelle Sulish had 22 kills, a new career high, and Larissa Seger tied her best kill total with 13. Anna Jaworski and Ema Stermenska had 27 and 25 assists, respectively while Jillian Shaneyfelt added 9 assists as well to go along with 20 digs. It was a balanced effort from the Dawgs in their sweep over the Governors as no player tallied double-digit kills, led by Ella Swansiger’s 9. Jaworski and Stermenska combined for 39 assists while Shaneyfelt and Cecilia Bulmahn recorded 18 and 15 digs, respectively. SIU played both matches without their kill leader Kelly Franklin who sustained an ankle injury last Tuesday at UT Martin. The team doesn’t believe the injury is too serious and will hope to have their outside hitter back soon. It will be interesting to see if she suits up this weekend. They will play Missouri State on September 19 at 4 pm, SIUE on the 20th at 3 pm, and SEMO on the 21st at 3pm.
