National Pan-Hallenic Council kicked off their week with getting students on SIUC campus registered to vote.
The event was held in the Morris Library in the rotunda on Monday. The council offered pizza to any students or community members willing to register or that needed to re-register for the upcoming election on Nov 6.
Frankie Anderson, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc and a senior studying social work, hopes to get a lot of students registered.
“Our goal is to get a 100 people registered to vote and even more than that because we have more than 100 students on campus” Anderson said.
Anderson also explains that her being a part of African American community increases her importance in voting.
“As an African-American and as an African-American female we should be exercising our right to vote because there was a point in time when we were not allowed to vote” Anderson said.
NPH Council, accompanied by the Divine 9 used their social media to reach students on campus.
To get prepared for the event, Mikala Barret, NPHC Council president, went to the University of Illinois and the Murphysboro, Illinois Courthouse for voter registration training.
Barret spent most her Saturdays to receive training on the proper ways to get students to vote.
Barrett, also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. said that there were small numbers of millennials that participated in voting for the 2016 election.
"Millennials take up 31% of the population and we need to become more aware in more involved”, Barrett said.
Barrett stated if more people vote on those issues they can be resolved by voting.
NPHC reached their goal of 100 students registered to vote that day.
NPH Council will be holding more events throughout the week. The deadline for paper registration is October 9th and online registration is open until the day of election November 6th.
“Register to vote today and the time is now,”-Anderson
